Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior representative commented the attack rendered him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
